Visas, Permits & Trekking

  • Yes, but the process is simple.

    • Citizens of all countries can get a visa on arrival.

    • Members of the African Union, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie get 30 days free.

    • The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD $100) covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya for 90 days.

  • Gorilla permits are USD 1,500 per person, per trek. Golden monkey and chimpanzee permits are USD 100 and USD 150 respectively.

  • Guests must be at least 15 years old to join gorilla or chimpanzee treks.

  • A maximum of 8 guests per group, to minimize impact and maximize intimacy.

  • Anywhere from 1–6 hours, depending on the gorilla family location and guest fitness. Time with gorillas is always strictly limited to one hour.

  • Moderate fitness is required. Trek difficulty varies based on the day’s assigned gorilla group, but some treks can be steep or lengthy. We always brief guests honestly and can request a trek that suits their ability.

  • Yes — we can ask park authorities on the day of trekking. Requests are considered, but not guaranteed.

  • Yes. Porters are highly recommended and cost around USD 10–20 per trek. They assist with bags and balance and are an excellent way to support the local community.

  • We’ll send a full packing list, but essentials include comfortable walking shoes, long trousers, rain gear, gloves, a daypack, and layers for changing weather.

  • Yes. Scenic forest walks, cultural experiences, village visits, and spa time can all be integrated.

  • Yes, but without flash. Guides will advise guests on how to be respectful and get the best shots.

Travel Planning & Logistics

  • Rwanda is a year-round destination. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are popular for trekking, but the green season offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and great birding.

  • Yes. Rwanda is widely regarded as one of the safest and cleanest countries in Africa, including the capital, Kigali. Standard travel awareness applies, but the security presence is strong and discreet.

  • Yes. All Inyambo itineraries include a VIP meet-and-greet, with assistance through immigration and customs when available.

  • We use high-quality, air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers and guides. All vehicles are well-maintained, and seating is always private unless otherwise requested.

  • We work across the full range — from high-end lodges to boutique guesthouses — and always recommend properties that align with guest preferences and itinerary flow.

  • Absolutely. Rwanda is one of Africa’s safest countries, and we regularly host solo guests.

In-Country Support

Guest Experience & Practicalities

  • Yes — VISA and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels and lodges. ATMs are found in major towns, but cash is useful for tips and markets.

  • Tipping is discretionary but appreciated. Here’s what we typically suggest:

    • Safari Guide (multi-day): $20–50 per guest/day

    • Gorilla/Chimp Ranger: $10–20 per guest/day

    • Trek Porters: $10 per trek

    • Lodge/Hotel Staff: $5 per guest/meal

    • Exceptional service: 10% or as felt appropriate

Vaccinations & Health

  • Yes—if arriving from a Yellow Fever risk country, proof of vaccination is required. If coming directly from Europe or the US, it's not mandatory, but always best to check current regulations.

  • Rwanda is a malaria area. We recommend guests consult their doctors and take appropriate precautions.

  • Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance — including coverage for medical evacuation —is required for all Inyambo guests.

  • Bottled water is widely available and recommended. Most lodges also provide filtered water.
